Associated British Ports and Verizon Business have announced that they will be working together to deploy private 5G at the Port of Southampton. Delivered in partnership with Nokia, Verizon’s private 5G platform will provide one of the United Kingdom’s (UK’s) busiest ports with a secure, low-latency private network connection.

Associated British Ports operates a network of 21 ports, including the Port of Southampton. Acting as the UK’s number one port responsible for £40 billion in exports from the UK every year, the Port of Southampton provides a critical link in supply chains serving businesses and manufacturers throughout the nation. It is also the UK’s number one port for cars and cruise, handling approximately 900,000 cars and welcoming millions of cruise passengers annually. With this new contract the Port of Southampton will become the first UK mainland port with a private 5G network.

“Verizon’s private 5G is the foundation for a completely dedicated edge compute infrastructure, enabling ultra-low latency at the premise, higher levels of security and deeper customization for our partners,” comments Tami Erwin, CEO, Verizon Business. “Businesses such as ABP, are coming under more pressure to evolve their services at tremendous speeds in order to take advantage of new commercial opportunities. Along with Nokia, we have been able to equip ABP to take advantage of the immediate benefits private 5G offers, and most importantly prepare the Port of Southampton to take full advantage of new technology applications and real-time analytics which will digitally transform its services in the future.”

The Verizon private 5G platform will provide ABP with a reliable and secure private wireless data network across selected areas within the East and West Docks of the Port. This will enable data communications to be consolidated onto a single network, reducing previous complexity as well as helping to improve the reliability and security of terminal communications.

The deployment will not only address the immediate problem of loss of onsite data communications as a result of poor Wi-Fi connectivity, but the advanced capabilities of private 5G, specifically its reliability, throughput, security and ultra-low latency can help enable the use of new technologies such as real-time analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine Learning. In turn, this can help with the enablement of new service advancements including asset tracking, autonomous guided vehicles, workflow management, predictive maintenance and safety monitoring in the near future.

Verizon Business announced the launch of its international private 5G platform for global enterprises located in Europe and Asia-Pacific in October 2020. This solution, currently delivered in partnership with Nokia, will enable businesses to deploy a private industrial grade dedicated 5G network capability within their premises. The network is on Nokia Digital Automation Cloud, an application platform providing high-bandwidth, low-latency, hyper-fast private wireless connectivity and local edge computing.

Höegh Autoliners has elected to onboard four additional vessels to a joint digital solution combining KONGSBERG’s Vessel Insight and MAN Energy Solutions’ PrimeServ Assist. Following the signing of a digitalization partnership between Kongsberg Digital and MAN Energy Solutions in May 2020, the combined infrastructure was initially trialed by Höegh in a two-vessel pilot project which has now successfully completed.

The agreement between MAN Energy Solutions and Kongsberg Digital came about as the companies realized that their separate efforts in the maritime digitalization space were complementary. Kongsberg Digital’s Vessel Insight – a cost efficient data infrastructure solution for the maritime market – is a natural match with MAN PrimeServ Assist digital solution for optimization of engine use and maintenance. After entering a strategic digitalization partnership, they undertook the delivery of a joint digital infrastructure to Höegh Autoliner’s Horizon class sister-vessels Höegh Trotter and Höegh Traveller. The pilot completion is formalized, and the project has been successful.

“We are very pleased with the results of the pilot project with Höegh and MAN Energy Solutions,” says Andreas Jagtøyen, EVP Digital Ocean, Kongsberg Digital. “The joint digital infrastructure allows the operator to monitor vessel assets and check the running conditions of the engines remotely from shore, in order to give decision-making support to the ship’s crew. Also, the Vessel Performance application from the Kognifai Marketplace gives Höegh tools for reducing fuel consumption and unnecessary running of equipment, as well as benchmarking performance between vessels. We are happy that Höegh has decided to roll Vessel Insight, MAN PrimeServ Assist and Vessel Performance out on several additional vessels.”

These benefits are particularly important to Höegh, who are now installing Vessel Insight, the MAN PrimeServ Assist app and Vessel Performance on four additional vessels. Getting access to complete and contextualized high-quality data from several vessels allows fleet benchmarking and is a significant step towards digitalizing their fleet operations.

Building on the success of the pilot project, we are pleased to continue the partnership with the addition of four vessels in our fleet.”

SPEEDY INSTALLATION BY CREW AT SEA

When developing Vessel Insight, KONGSBERG focused on making it a low-cost, easy-to-implement data infrastructure solution for a broad market. An important aspect of this is that installation can be carried out by vessel crews while at sea. The Vessel Insight hardware is sent to the vessel and the crew connects it. Immediately, all data is sent to the Kognifai cloud and contextualized. Using learnings from the first installation, the installation time was drastically reduced on the second Höegh vessel, taking only a day. Following the successful project, Höegh Autoliners decided to install Vessel Insight on an additional four sister-vessels in their Horizon class fleet.

MAN Energy Solutions and KONGSBERG will begin delivery of Vessel Insight and MAN PrimeServ Assist to the additional vessels immediately.

Descartes Systems Group, the global leader in uniting logistics-intensive businesses in commerce, announced that Singapore-based Ocean Network Express (ONE), the world’s sixth largest container carrier, is using the Descartes Kontainers solution to digitize the shipper-facing aspects of its freight execution operations in 11 Asian countries as part of a pilot program.

“Shippers today need a more efficient and streamlined end-to-end freight booking experience,” Hiroki Tsujii, Managing Director, Marketing & Commercial said at ONE. “With the launch of our new digital platform ONE QUOTE, powered by Descartes Kontainers, customers can now receive an instant quote for export shipments and place bookings anytime, anywhere. It’s a one stop service that completely automates traditional manual tasks.”

The Descartes Kontainers solution facilitates a fully digital customer experience including quoting, booking, tracking and dashboard analytics for shipping lines, freight forwarders, ocean transportation intermediaries (OTI) and non-vessel operating common carriers (NVOCC) around the world. The digital freight execution platform enables these logistics services providers (LSP) to rapidly create branded, online self-service experiences for their customers. With its recent acquisition of Portrix Logistics Systems, Descartes can also now provide freight forwarders with a comprehensive digital solution for engaging customers and managing rates. However, the solution also helps LSPs preserve investments in existing rate management and back-office systems and quickly get their digital customer experience live through the use of standardized APIs. Even large carriers and LSPs such as ONE are able to get customers booking freight in just a few months.

Ocean Network Express (ONE) continues to expand its current refrigerated container (reefer) fleet by adding another 27,500 new units (including 850 units equipped with advanced Controlled Atmosphere (CA) technology) to meet the growing demand for refrigerated cargo around the world. This new investment comes on the heels of 5000 units (all 40’HC) invested by ONE in early 2020, which demonstrates its strong commitment to meet the demand for containerized reefer trade.

Despite the challenges triggered by COVID-19, the global refrigerated container trade showed strong resilience in 2020 compared to dry cargo and ONE expects this growth to be maintained in
2021. ONE is currently working towards the application of the latest IoT technology into its fleet of reefer containers which provides real time visibility of critical information such as the temperature and humidity inside the container, thereby enhancing cargo care during the entire voyage.
