DP World Antwerp Gateway has ordered a fleet of 34 Automated Stacking Cranes (Konecranes Gottwald ARMGs) for its container terminal in Antwerp, Belgium. The cranes will be an expansion to the current fleet of 20 ARMGs currently in operation. The first batch will be delivered in Q2 2022, the last batch by 2026. This order was booked in December 2020.

DP World Antwerp Gateway was very motivated to continue their current operating concept, using their current ASC system delivered by Gottwald in 2006. With this new ASC system, featuring a fleet of Konecranes Gottwald ARMGs, the advantages of the latest automation technologies will be exploited.

Jef Lambregts, Head of Projects at DP World Antwerp Gateway, said: “We had a series of deep discussions with Konecranes regarding every aspect of our automation expansion at our terminal. Eventually, we were convinced that Konecranes could provide every dimension needed. We need technology continuation of our current ASC concept. We want to take advantage of the latest developments in automation technology. We will get improved automated truck handling and remote operation ergonomics.”

Konecranes is providing both technology continuity and innovation. The new ASC system order will follow the Gottwald ARMG design concept, the most notable physical feature being the rigid guiding beam for container load control. A new trolley design has been developed to support an increased lifting height. The new design will be based on Konecranes’ proven technology, with a hybrid of existing systems for auto-landing on the truck chassis.

As part of the project, TBA will extend the existing Equipment Control System (ECS) used at the terminal. The TBA ECS is highly flexible and field-proven, able to operate reliably and efficiently across every type of automated container handling equipment and every Terminal Operating System (TOS) and equipment combination.

The new Konecranes Gottwald ARMGs will stack containers 1-over-6 spanning 9 container rows, providing excellent stacking density.

Port Services from Konecranes will also be part of the delivery. There will be an extension to the current Service Level Agreement (SLA), which will include software updates.

This is part of Kone­cranes’ path to port automation, where container terminals improve productivity and safety in manageable steps. From smart features up to full automation, the path can include supervised operation and remote operation to smoothly introduce the power of automation. The path to port automation applies to all container handling equipment brands. Full automation can be the final goal but it doesn’t have to be. Flexibility is the key.

ICTSI Rio Brasil is expanding its logistics support services in Brazil, adding rail logistics to its operations with the long-term lease of Floriano Intermodal Terminal in Barra Mansa, Rio de Janeiro.

To run this operation, ICTSI Rio formed a new company – IRB Logística – to take over the operations of the terminal from Multitex Logistica starting on 1 July 2021. IRB Logística will offer sustainable cargo handling, transport, and storage services to the economic, industrial, and production centers in Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo.

“We are excited for IRB Logística to commence operations and look forward to coordinating closely with our sister company to improve synergy in the regional supply chain. While ICTSI Rio’s and IRB Logística’s operations are independent from one another, we share the common goal of driving economic growth in the region by providing more efficient, seamless, and value-added solutions across the entire logistics chain,” said Roberto Lopes, ICTSI Rio Chief Executive Officer.

Located in an industrial cluster some 150 kilometers away from the Port of Rio de Janeiro, the intermodal terminal mainly handles containerized cargo and steel products, which are better suited for rail tranport, for industries in the South Fluminense region.  It can accommodate up to 70 train wagons and features a yard for storage and container stuffing, as well as a covered area for storage of finished products.

The 3.4-hectare port is 100 percent solar-powered and operates a fleet of cargo handling equipment that runs on electricity – operational aspects that align perfectly with the sustainability strategy of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. across its global portfolio.

RUSCON GROUP, one of the major Russian container transhipment service providers is expanding in the Netherlands (Rotterdam) with the opening of Smartcontainer BV., according to the company’s release.

Smartcontainer helps European shippers to optimize their supply chain activities and improve container transit between Europe and the Russian and Eurasian markets. This is done in collaboration with Delo Group, the main Russian private transport and logistics holding company.

Smartcontainer BV is one of the members of the Road2Holland consortium of the RVO, whose spearhead is freight transport by rail between the Netherlands and China.

APM Terminals Pecém handled the shipment of three wind blades of 72.5 meters each on 25 March and 1 April, in partnership with Maersk Brazil, was the largest shipment of non-containerized cargo on a container ship in the world.

The operation was the result of joint commercial actions among several companies within Maersk, with the carrier Aliança Navegação e Logística responsible for sea freight, APM Terminals Pecém being the port of shipment and Maersk Brazil’s Logistics and Services team providing logistics solutions for the customer.

The cargo was destined for the state of Santa Catarina and operations were performed in areas 9 and 10 at the Multi-Utility Terminal (TMUT) of the Port of Pecém.

For the Managing Director of APM Terminals Pecém, Daniel Rose, in addition to integrated logistics centered on the customer, the operation itself was very important for the Terminal. “We were very pleased with the performance of our team, who demonstrated agility and acted with tranquillity throughout operations. Our planning, safety and operations teams were fully aligned, which allowed us to carry out this complex operation successfully together with our partners.”

Complex logistics

For the operations, a Ship to Shore (STS) crane provided by APM Terminals Pecém was first used to ship flat rack containers to serve as a base for the support and movement frames on which the blades would be docked. Subsequently, two mobile port cranes (MHC type) were used to hoist the blades, which weigh approximately 21 tons each. The shipments took place on the vessels Bartolomeu Dias and Vincente Pinzon from Aliança Navegação e Logística, which operates one of the cabotage lines that pass through the port.

Despite the novelty, the operation was carried out following strict safety protocols.  For the Operations Manager, Herllon Rossato Rossdeutscher, preparation was very important. “For more than a month we had been working on the planning of this operation and being able to carry it out successfully gave the team more confidence, experience and maturity perform more complex operations in the future”.

APM Terminals Pecém Head of Commercial, André Magalhães, comments: “For this complex operation, six bays were used for each of the 72-metre wind blades, totalling twelve bays and four flat rack containers. For the transfer to the ship, we used two MHCs, which loaded two blades at an incredible time of 55 minutes. Due to the size of the blades and the type of ship used, we are probably facing a new world record.”

André Magalhães also shares that the operation demonstrates the high capacity of APM Terminals to offer customized solutions and stay focused on customer needs, while playing a key role as a logistics enabler for the development of the country.

APM Terminals Pecém offers 6 Cabotage services connecting the south to the northeast of the country and Manaus, being a strategic location for exports and imports, in addition to having a route to the east coast of the United States throughout the year and two more routes to Europe during the period of the fruit harvest.
